VW Transporter battery fault repair North Wales
Last week at Kinmel Campers, we were called out to assist with a VW Transporter that was experiencing electrical issues. This campervan, fitted with a side conversion including a sink, gas hob and 12V control panel, had both leisure and main battery faults that were causing the vehicle to fail to start and compromising the internal electrics.
We attended the job quickly and got to work diagnosing and resolving the faults, leaving the customer with a fully functional and reliable system for their next adventure.
Full Battery Diagnosis: Leisure & Main System Checks

Our initial checks revealed that the leisure battery had failed, which had also compromised the main vehicle battery. When the two are wired incorrectly or one is underperforming, both batteries can begin to suffer. In this case, the vehicle wouldn’t start and several electrical issues were present inside the conversion.
We used our professional multimeter equipment to test voltage at both batteries and through key points in the split charge setup. This confirmed:
- Leisure battery voltage was well below minimum
- Main battery was drained and not holding charge
- An old inverter had been poorly wired in with split wires and loose connections
This setup posed a risk not just to functionality but to safety, particularly with 12V appliances running off compromised electrics.
Replacing the Leisure Battery & Disconnecting Faulty Wiring

We removed the failed leisure battery and installed a new, heavy-duty leisure battery designed to support campervan use. Before installation, we fully checked the charge wiring, fuse integrity, and ground points to ensure a proper connection.
As part of the job:
- ⚡ Faulty inverter wiring was fully disconnected
- 🔧 All connections were checked and rewired where necessary
- ✅ Leisure battery installed and securely fastened
- 🔋 Main vehicle battery also tested and replaced
We also made sure the battery readings were stable and that alternator charge was reaching both batteries correctly after startup.
Inspecting the Campervan’s Side Conversion

This VW Transporter was fitted with a neat side conversion that included:
- A gas hob and sink unit
- 12V power panel with switches for lights and accessories
- Additional sockets and USB ports
We did a full test of all internal systems after the battery install:
- ✔️ Verified switch panel operation
- ✔️ Checked all lighting and 12V outlets
- ✔️ Ensured the fridge and water pump (if fitted) functioned correctly
No faults were present after the repair, and everything powered up smoothly with stable voltage across all components.
Customer Support and Electrical Walkthrough
As always, we don’t just fix the issue — we make sure you understand how your setup works. Our technician took time to walk the customer through their:
- Split charge setup
- Battery locations and access
- Basic maintenance tips for battery life
- Advice on safe inverter installations
The customer was very happy with the result, now confident their system was working correctly and safely.
