Some campervans arrive at Kinmel Campers already in great condition — and this Volkswagen T4 campervan is a perfect example. It’s clean, well cared for, and clearly loved by its owner. Our goal? To carry out a series of carefully planned Volkswagen T4 campervan upgrades to enhance its mechanical performance, future reliability, and electrical readiness.
This VW T4 is currently undergoing an ongoing upgrade project here at Kinmel Campers, where we’re completing a full mechanical service, critical upgrades, and essential long-term protection work. It’s a perfect example of what we do best: help campervan owners extend the life, comfort, and performance of their vans with expert enhancements done right.
Ongoing Work: Stage One of the Upgrade
This project is in progress, with the following work already completed or currently underway in our Rhyl workshop:
✅ Underseal Protection for Longevity
To preserve the T4’s already-clean underbody, we’ve removed plastic trays where needed and are applying a full underseal coating. This protects the chassis from:
- Rust and corrosion
- Saltwater exposure
- Road grime and debris
It’s a vital layer of protection for long-term ownership, especially for North Wales roads and coastal conditions.
✅ Rear Shock Absorber Upgrade (Coil-Over Kit)
We’re replacing the rear shocks with a road-spec coil-over kit, designed to offer better ride control and support for potential camper conversions or load carrying. The result: improved handling without sacrificing comfort.
✅ Rear Brake Discs & Pads – Supplied and Fitted
We supplied and fitted Delphi discs and pads, chosen for their premium quality and above-OEM performance. These will deliver:
- Shorter braking distances
- Better fade resistance
- Enhanced confidence when fully loaded
✅ Front Outer Rack Ends
Two new front outer rack ends are being installed to improve steering accuracy and reduce wear. We’ve scheduled two hours of labour for alignment and fitting — ensuring precise results and safe handling.
✅ Welding & Body Integrity
While the van arrived in good condition, we’ve performed minor welding where needed for long-term strength. We also added a sliding door drain hole — a smart preventative upgrade to help water drain away and stop corrosion before it starts.
✅ Electrical System: DC-to-DC Split Charge Install
We’re mid-install on a split charge relay system — allowing the leisure battery to charge safely while protecting the starter battery. This upgrade supports:
- Future electrical builds
- Off-grid power capability
- Safe charging with smart voltage cut-out
✅ Sliding Door Seal Replacement & Window Rebonding
We’re replacing the sliding door seal to ensure full weather protection, while also removing and re-bonding the rear window for a secure, leak-proof finish. These details make a real difference in everyday comfort.
✅ Bosch Glow Plug Replacement
Cold starts will be a breeze with a brand new set of Bosch glow plugs — improving engine performance and reliability, especially during the colder seasons.

This T4 is still undergoing upgrades, with more enhancements planned in the coming days. Future stages may include:
