Why Your Campervan Needs a Split Charge Relay System
Your main van battery is for starting the engine. A leisure battery gives you a second power source for all your 12V gear — and prevents you from getting stranded.
The split-charge relay automatically charges your leisure battery while you drive, using excess alternator power. It’s completely automatic — no switches or solar needed.

Common Questions About Leisure Battery Installation
What is a leisure battery?
A leisure battery is a secondary battery installed in your campervan to power 12V appliances like lights, USB ports, fridges, and diesel heaters — without affecting your main vehicle battery. It charges while you drive and keeps your gear running when parked.
What’s a split-charge relay?
A split-charge relay is a smart switch that automatically charges your leisure battery while the engine is running. It senses voltage from the alternator and routes power to the leisure battery — then disconnects when the engine is off, so you don’t drain your starter battery.
We install Voltage Sensing Relays (VSR) which are fully automatic — no manual switches needed.
What’s included in the installation?
âś… Brand new 110Ah or 130Ah AGM Leisure Battery
âś… Intelligent Split-Charge Relay System
âś… Heavy-duty wiring, fusing & earth bonding
âś… Clean install into your van (under seat or boot area)
âś… Full integration with your 12V circuit or fuseboard

What size battery do I need?
It depends on your setup. Here’s a general guide:
110Ah – Great for weekenders and basic 12V setups
130Ah – Ideal for longer trips, fridges, heaters and more charging capacity
Dual or Lithium – For full-timers, off-grid builds, or solar-powered rigs (ask us for details)
We’ll help you pick the right size based on how you use your van.
Can I use it to power a fridge or heater?
Yes! A properly installed leisure battery system can run:
12V Compressor Fridges
Diesel Night Heaters
Water pumps
LED lights
USB charging
Fans and low-wattage appliances
It’s the foundation of any off-grid camper setup.
Do you install battery monitors or inverters?
Yes — we can add:
Digital voltage displays or Bluetooth monitors
12V fuseboards and custom wiring
Inverters for 240V mains power (additional cost)
Let us know what you need and we’ll bundle it into your install.
Will it damage my van’s electrics?
No — we use heavy-duty cabling, proper fusing, and professional routing. We never cut corners or piggyback off factory systems.
Everything is tested and built to be safe, robust, and removable if needed.
Where does the battery go?
Common install locations:
Under the passenger seat
In a rear cupboard or locker
Inside a dedicated battery box under the bed
We’ll choose the best spot depending on your van layout and usage.
Can I upgrade later?
Yes — we wire with future upgrades in mind. You can always add:
Solar panel systems
Inverters
Extra sockets
Second leisure batteries
We’ll future-proof your setup where possible.
What vans do you install into?
We fit leisure battery systems into:
VW Transporters (T5 / T6 / T6.1)
Nissan Elgrand / Toyota Alphard
Nissan Elgrand / Mitsubishi Delica
Ford Transit, Custom, Connect
Peugeot Boxer / Fiat Ducato / Citroën Relay
Self-builds and microcampers
If it’s got wheels and a 12V system, we’ll make it work.
How long does fitting take?
Most installs are completed in half a day to a full day, depending on complexity and add-ons.
Drop off in the morning — ready by the afternoon.
