Latest Work: VW T4 with Swift High Top – Complete Electrical Overhaul, Servicing & Rust Protection

At Kinmel Campers, we love breathing new life into classic vans, making them ready for modern adventures. One of our most recent and exciting projects was a VW T4 with Swift high top, which underwent a full campervan electrical upgrade, lithium battery installation, mechanical servicing, and underseal rust treatment.

This campervan was already a strong base, but the owners wanted to future-proof it with a setup that allowed complete off-grid independence while improving reliability and comfort. Here’s a breakdown of everything we did, why it matters, and how it transforms the way the VW T4 will be used.

Why Upgrade a VW T4 with Swift High Top?

The VW T4 is an iconic campervan, loved for its practicality, reliability, and versatility. When combined with a Swift high top conversion, it becomes a perfect touring camper – offering more headroom, storage, and comfort.

However, many of these vehicles are now over 20 years old. That means their electrical systems, engines, and bodywork need upgrades to keep up with the demands of modern travel. By investing in solar panels, lithium leisure batteries, and rust prevention, the owner has ensured their VW T4 remains a dependable home on wheels for many years to come.

Solar Power – 260W of Off-Grid Energy

We started by installing two 130W solar panels, for a combined system of 260W. Mounted securely on the Swift high top, these panels capture maximum sunlight throughout the day.

Why does this matter? A strong solar system gives vanlifers the freedom to camp wherever they like, without relying on electric hook-ups. The system powers lights, devices, and other campervan essentials. We paired the panels with a high-efficiency MPPT controller, which optimises the charging process and ensures the batteries always receive the best possible input – even in the cloudy UK weather.

This addition makes the VW T4 far more sustainable and cost-effective, as solar power reduces dependency on campsites and fossil fuels.

Lithium Leisure Batteries – Smarter, Lighter, Stronger

Next, we supplied and fitted two 200Ah lithium leisure batteries, giving the van a huge bank of reliable storage. Lithium batteries are a game-changer in campervans, offering:

  • Lighter weight compared to lead-acid alternatives
  • Faster charging times
  • Deeper discharge cycles (use more of the stored energy without damage)
  • Longer lifespan

To ensure safety and reliability, we re-wired the entire leisure system, moving the batteries into a secure cupboard at the rear of the camper. We also fitted bus bars, an isolation switch, and professional-grade battery fixings, ensuring everything is safe, neat, and easy to maintain.

This upgrade means the VW T4 with Swift high top can now power appliances for much longer periods off-grid, without the need to constantly recharge.

Renogy Inverter – 2000W of Pure Off-Grid Power

One of the most exciting additions was the installation of a Renogy 2000W inverter (4000W peak). This inverter converts the 12V battery power into 230V AC, allowing the use of standard household appliances.

We fitted:

  • x3 UK plug sockets
  • USB ports
  • Type-C charging points

This means the owners can run laptops, small kitchen appliances, and other devices as if they were at home. For added convenience, we also installed the Renogy inverter extension switch, allowing the inverter to be turned on and off easily from inside the living space.

With this system, the VW T4 Swift high top is truly ready for modern vanlife – blending classic style with 21st-century tech.

Engine & Gearbox Servicing – Keeping It Reliable

Of course, electrical independence only matters if the van itself is mechanically sound. That’s why we carried out a comprehensive service on the VW T4, including:

  • Fresh engine oil and sump plug
  • New oil filter
  • New fuel filter
  • New cabin filter

We also carried out a full gearbox service, ensuring smoother gear changes and prolonging the life of the transmission. Preventive maintenance like this not only reduces the risk of breakdowns but also improves fuel efficiency and overall driving comfort.

Rust Protection & Undersealing – Extending the Life of the VW T4

Like many older vans, this VW T4 showed signs of surface rust. Rust is a campervan owner’s worst enemy, especially in the UK where rain and road salt accelerate corrosion.

We carried out rust treatment to stop the spread before applying a comprehensive underseal coating. This forms a tough protective barrier against water, salt, and dirt, keeping the underside of the van safe for years to come.

Rust prevention is one of the most valuable investments an owner can make – without it, even the best-maintained camper can face costly structural repairs down the line.

Interior Upgrades – Privacy & Comfort

To finish off the project, we fitted screw-in curtains, giving the van a more homely feel while improving privacy for overnight stays. It’s a small detail but one that makes a huge difference in day-to-day campervan life.

The Final Result – A Future-Ready Classic

This VW T4 with Swift high top is now a fully future-proof campervan. With:

  • 260W solar panels
  • 400Ah of lithium battery power
  • 2000W Renogy inverter with modern outlets
  • Comprehensive servicing
  • Full rust protection
  • Comfort-focused interior upgrades

…it’s ready for many more years of safe, reliable, and independent adventures.
